Junior Service League donates to GSW scholarship
Raises awareness for meningococcal meningitis
AMERICUS--The Junior Service League (JSL) of Americus recently made a donation to the Georgia Southwestern Foundation's Evan Bozof Athletic Scholarship Fund. With a gift of $20,000 the JSL not only supported education but helped raise awareness for a deadly disease known as meningococcal meningitis.
Evan Bozof, an outstanding student and pitcher for GSW's baseball team in the late '90s, died tragically from a nearly month-long bout with meningococcal meningitis. This scholarship fund was endowed in his honor during the spring of 2008. Beginning fall 2009, students who excel on the baseball diamond and in the classroom will benefit from it.
"The [Junior Service] League is very thankful to have the volunteer support of GSW students/athletes at our fundraisers each year, and we were glad to give this donation to return that support to the students, GSW and our community, while at the same time, raising awareness for meningococcal meningitis," said 2009 JSL Past President Faith Pinnell.
Bozof's former GSW teammate and friend Ryan Young is the president of GSW Athletics' booster organization, the Hurricane Club.
"Every scholarship given from this fund will help resurrect the memory of Evan Bozof and support the GSW Athletic Department," said Young. "I would like to thank the Junior Service League for helping this fund grow, and I would encourage everyone to support their efforts and generosity in this community."
