Adams, Coley go yard as ‘Canes win on Senior Night, 10-6

Georgia Southwestern jumped out to an early 7-1 lead Wednesday evening at Hurricane Field and cruised to a 10-6 win over Thomas University on Senior Night.

With two outs in the bottom of the first inning, the Hurricanes rattled off five straight hits led by back-to-back doubles from Zack Stanton and senior Cody Adams. With a run in and Adams on second, Daniel Stokes singled through the left side and Adams advanced to third. Senior Trey Reeves then singled to left field to drive in Adams; Stokes advanced to second. Shane Doyle singled up the middle to drive in Stokes and give the ‘Canes a 3-0 lead after an inning of play.

After TU scored a run in the second off a solo home run from Matt Wilson, GSW was back on the attack. With one out, Chris Lingham reached on a bunt single and proceeded to steal second base, his 25th swipe of the season. The Hurricanes put together back-to-back doubles for the second time in the game when senior Daniel Lynn drove in Lingham with a shot to left center and Stanton followed with his second double of the contest to drive in Lynn. Adams finished off the inning with his third home run of the spring, a line shot that curled inside the left field foul pole.

Thomas scored two runs in the fourth inning to pull within four at 7-3. Southwestern got a run back in the fifth inning when Stanton hit a RBI-single to bring in Noble Coley, who led off the frame with a walk.

Coley added some insurance for GSW in the sixth when he belted his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left to give the Hurricanes their biggest lead of the evening, 10-3.

TU scored a run in the seventh and two more in the eighth to round out the scoring.

Night Hawks starting pitcher Steven Brooker (2-1) lasted only 1.1 innings, surrendering seven runs on nine hits to take the loss.

GSW starter Ryan Lackey (2-5) threw 6.1 innings, allowed four runs on nine hits, struck out two and did not walk a batter to earn the win. Jody Sellars finished the game and allowed two runs - none earned - on two hits in his 2.2 innings.

Wilson, Ryan Stovall and Matthew Blanton had two hits apiece for Thomas (27-11).

Stanton turned in a perfect night at the plate for GSW, finishing 4-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Lingham went 3-for-5 in the leadoff spot with a run scored. Adams and Coley each finished 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and two runs scored. Adams added a double and drove in three total runs.

The 26 total bases reached by Hurricane batters tied a season-high.

The Hurricanes (17-31) travel to Columbus State on Friday to begin their final weekend of the regular season. GSW and CSU play one game on Friday (5:00 p.m.) and two on Saturday (2:00 & 5:00 p.m.) in the Peach Belt Conference series finale.
