Four named to PBC All-Academic team
Georgia Southwestern State University student-athletes Andrew Whiggum, Jared Allen, Tyler Daniel and Jody Sellars have been named to the Peach Belt Conference All-Academic baseball team.
Whiggum was a first team selection. Allen was named to the second team. Daniel and Sellars were voted to the third team.
Whiggum, a senior pitcher from Hawkinsville, made 13 starts in 2009. He finished with a 4-7 record in 74.1 innings of work. The four wins tied for the team lead on the Hurricane pitching staff. In the classroom, Whiggum, an exercise science major, owns a perfect 4.00 grade point average. A PBC Gold Scholar, he was named the 2008-09 GSW Male Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Allen, a sophomore first baseman from Lyons, started 43 games for the Hurricanes and hit .247 with five doubles, two triples, two home runs and 20 runs batted in. He stole 12 bases in 15 attempts and had an eight-game hitting streak this spring. A history education major and PBC Silver Scholar, Allen holds a 3.52 grade point average.
Daniel, a sophomore pitcher from Dublin, made 15 relief appearances for GSW this spring and posted a 5.81 earned run average. In 26.1 innings he stuck out 19 batters. A health and physical education major and PBC Presidential Scholar, Daniel has a 3.45 grade point average.
Sellars, a sophomore pitcher from Americus, started seven games for the ‘Canes, while appearing in 16 contests. He posted a 2-2 record with a 6.80 earned run average. In 42.1 innings he recorded 27 strikeouts. A health and physical education major and PBC Silver Scholar, Sellars holds a 3.40 grade point average.
The All-Academic team is part of a new season-long program recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of PBC student-athletes in the classroom as well as on the field. To be eligible for the squad, a student-athlete must participate in at least half of her team's events and be either a starter or significant contributor; have achieved a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale); and have completed at least one full academic year at her current institution.
