GSW baseball places three on PBC All-Academic Team
AMERICUS - Georgia Southwestern State University seniors Jared Allen, Heath Lock and Jody Sellars have been named to the 2011 Peach Belt Conference All-Academic Baseball Team as announced by the conference office.
Allen, a first team selection, started all 48 games at first base for the Hurricanes and finished with a .299 batting average. The Lyons, Ga. native hit an impressive .345 in conference play - leading the team. Overall, he tallied 11 doubles, a triple and 32 RBIs while swiping a team-high 17 stolen bases. Allen had an eight-game hitting streak this spring and recorded 14 multi-hit games, including a 5-for-5 performance in the first game of the series at Lander on Apr. 9.
In the classroom, the history education major owns a 3.74 grade point average and is a three-time member of the PBC Presidential Honor Roll and a three-time PBC All-Academic Team selection.
Lock, a first team selection, appeared in 25 games and started 20 contests - 15 at second base - for GSW this spring. The Dalton, Ga. native keyed GSW's come-from-behind win against Augusta State on Mar. 20, when he belted a two-out, two-run single to tie the ballgame at 2-2 in the fifth inning.
In the classroom, the psychology major is a two-time member of the PBC Presidential Honor Roll and holds a 3.61 grade point average.
Sellars, recipient of an honorable mention, served as a weekend starter for the ‘Canes pitching staff this spring. He made 11 starts and held opponents to a .251 batting average. The Americus native tossed eight scoreless innings in a no-decision at No. 19 Columbus State on Apr. 17 and held No. 7 Georgia College to one earned run in seven innings for a win on Apr. 2.
A four-year member of the PBC Presidential Honor Roll, Sellars is also a three-time PBC All-Academic selection. Sellars graduated in December with a degree in health and physical education and finished with a 3.50 grade point average.
The All-Academic Team is part of a season-long program recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of PBC student-athletes in the classroom as well as on the field. To be eligible for the team, a student-athlete must 1) participate in at least half of his/her team’s events and be either a starter or significant contributor; 2) achieved a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and 3) completed at least one full academic year at his or her current institution.
