GSW wins 6th straight

AMERICUS - The Georgia Southwestern baseball team picked up its sixth-straight win, a 6-4 decision over Brewton-Parker on Tuesday evening at Hurricane Stadium. GSW made the most of its scoring opportunities, as all six hits came with runners on base.

The Hurricanes improved to 9-6 this spring, while BPC fell to 12-4. GSW has won all three meetings between the schools since 2007, the first season the 'Canes were NCAA Division II members.

Josh Palmer belted a two-run home run in the top of the first to give the Barons an early 2-0 lead.

Southwestern answered with two in the bottom of the frame. A Beau Parker leadoff walk was followed by singles from John Duran, Michel Coffey and Jared Allen.

The score remained tied until the fourth inning when Brewton-Parker added two runs off RBI singles from Daniel Jones and Derrick Fox.

In the bottom of the inning, GSW made the Barons pay for free passes once again when back-to-back RBI doubles from Jody Sellars and Corey Benson brought around Andrew Archer and Paschal Poston, who had both walked earlier in the inning.

An Archer RBI single in the eighth provided some insurance for the 'Canes. Archer drove in Andrew Anderson, who had walked one batter earlier then proceeded to steal second.

GSW did not have a batter finish with multiple hits.

Palmer went 3-for-4 with the home run and two RBIs to lead BPC. Fox and Kelvin Espinosa had two hits apiece.

GSW starter Brandon Vazquez threw three innings, allowed two runs and three hits, struck out three and walked three. Matt Suggs (2-0) picked up the win for the 'Canes with 2 2/3 innings of relief. He allowed two runs, surrendered five hits, struck out one and walked two. Stephen Daneman tossed 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and Gray Carden struck out two in a scoreless ninth to earn his second save of the spring.

The Barons threw five pitchers. Reed Owens (1-1) took the loss after allowing three runs in 1 1/3 innings of work.

The Hurricanes open Peach Belt Conference play with a three-game series at Montevallo beginning Friday at 8 p.m.
