Hurricanes sign 6-foot-8, 230-pound
Ian Andre, a forward from Daytona State College in Daytona Beach, Fla., has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball for Georgia Southwestern State University, head coach Mike Leeder announced today.
"We are extremely fortunate to get a player of Ian’s ability," said Leeder. "He is a physically strong player that is an outstanding low post defender and should be able to help upgrade our defense. We have been targeting Ian for a while, and we are excited that he has chosen to be a Hurricane.”
Andre, who will be a junior for the 'Canes in the fall, averaged 3.7 points and 5.4 rebounds per game last season at DSC while helping to lead the Falcons to a Mid-Florida Conference championship. He was a 2010 All-Mid-Florida Conference second team selection.
"Off the court Ian has displayed a maturity that we look forward to adding to our program,” said Leeder.”He is a team captain, an outstanding student, and a young man who is active in the campus community. I have no doubt that Ian will have an impact in our program both on and off the floor.”
Andre was the recipient of the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Leaders for Life Program Student-Athlete of the Week Award on March 31, 2010, for his work off the court.
At Daytona State, Andre acted as a chairperson for numerous volunteer and nonprofit activities such as the Haiti for Life Initiative, 2009 American Heart Association Walk, 2009 Disability Awareness Basketball Game, the 2009 Falcons Reading Program which allows student-athletes to read to preschool age children at the Child Development Lab School, and the 2010 Breast Cancer Awareness Basketball Game which is otherwise known as "Pink Day".
A standout student, as well, Andre has a 3.34 GPA and has earned several academic awards including the 2007 Men's Basketball Academic Player of the Year Award given by Daytona State. In addition, he was selected to the 2009 Mid-Florida Academic All-Conference Team and was named to the 2007 DSC President's List and the 2008-2010 Dean's Lists.
A graduate of Albany (Ga.) High School, Andre plans to major in Elementary Education.
Andre becomes the fourth player signed by the Hurricanes since January for the 2010-11 season, following NCAA Division I transfers Colin Slotter (6-5, 205-pound guard from Murray State), Matt Shaw (6-6, 250-pound forward from Lipscomb) and Phillip Brown (6-7, 220-pound forward from the Air Force Academy).
