AMERICUS - The Georgia Southwestern men's basketball team is hosting the four-team Tip-Off Classic this weekend in the Storm Dome with games on Friday and Saturday to open the 2012-13 regular season.
The action gets started at 5:30 p.m. on Friday with Columbus State and Brevard College taking the floor. GSW and Fort Valley State follow at 7:30 p.m.
On Saturday afternoon, the Hurricanes will meet Brevard at 2 p.m. with Columbus State and Fort Valley State wrapping up the Tip-Off Classic at 4 p.m.
GSW has won the last two meetings with FVSU, taking last year's game by 10 points, 68-58, in Americus. Southwestern and Brevard have not met since the Hurricanes joined the NCAA Division II ranks in 2006, but the Hurricanes have won the lone meeting between the two schools dating back to the 1993-94 season.
GSW led most of the first half in a 66-50 exhibition loss at Auburn on Monday where Michael Tankersley and Matt Shaw led the Hurricanes with 10 points apiece. Shaw added a game-high five rebounds and Derrick Dawkins dished out five assists.
Southwestern is coming off a 12-14 season where they finished in last place in the six-team western division of the Peach Belt Conference.
FVSU dropped a pair of games in the exhibition season. The Wildcats lost at Alabama State, 69-58, on Sunday and at Savannah State, 79-54, on Monday. FVSU is coming off a 14-15 season where they tied for seventh in the 13-team Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Brevard lost its lone exhibition game, a 91-60 decision at UNC Asheville on Monday. Gerel Simmons led the Tornados with 18 points. BC is coming off a 5-23 season where they finished ninth in the 10-team South Atlantic Conference. Lee Burgess enters his first season at the helm as head coach of the Tornados.
CSU was the only team in the Classic to pull out a win during the preseason. The Cougars defeated Carver Bible, 100-72, on Tuesday. BJ Battle led CSU with 24 points. Winford Ivey and Dimitri Davis added 15 points apiece. Jermaine Morgan posted a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. The Cougars are coming off an 18-12 campaign where they finished second in the six-team western division of the Peach Belt Conference.
