AMERICUS - The Georgia Southwestern men's basketball team will travel to the University of Georgia on Nov. 6 to take on the SEC-power Bulldogs in an exhibition game at 7 p.m. in the 10,523-seat Stegeman Coliseum.
UGA is coming off a 20-14 season and trip to the National Invitational Tournament. The Bulldogs return their top two scorers, junior Charles Mann (13.9 ppg) and junior Kenny Gaines (13.0 ppg), along with top rebounder Marcus Thornton (6.1 rpg). UGA was strong at home (15-3), but struggled on the road (4-7) last year as its season ended in the second round of the NIT against Louisiana Tech.
GSW is coming off a 20-11 season that opened with 10 consecutive victories and ended with a double-overtime loss in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional. The Hurricanes have reached the "Big Dance" in two of the last four seasons. Southwestern loses its top four scorers, including All-Peach Belt Conference selections Alan Arnett (16.6 ppg, 5.6 rpg), Daryl Davis (13.9 ppg, 6.7 rpg) and Johathan Brooks (13.0 ppg, 10.0 rpg). The fourth scorer, Jamon Hawkins (11.3 ppg) was named to the 2014 Peach Belt Conference All-Tournament team.
The Hurricanes have peppered their schedule with games against larger NCAA Division I opponents over the last four years. In 2012-13 GSW traveled to Auburn for an exhibition game before facing the University of Central Florida during the regular season. Southwestern traveled to Florida State for an exhibition in 2011 and squared off against Auburn during the 2010 regular season. Before those contests, it had been almost 27 years since the Hurricanes played a school out of major Division I conference. GSW came up short against the University of Texas in 1983, losing 77-60 in Austin.
GSW opens its 2014-15 regular season with four games outside Americus, beginning with a trip to Fort Valley State on Nov. 19.
