GREENWOOD, S.C. - The 16th-ranked Georgia Southwestern men's golf team posted an 18-over 594 on Monday to finish Day 1 in eighth place at the 17-team Bearcat Golf Classic hosted by Lander University. Craig Gibson led the Hurricanes with a two-round total of 5-under 139.
GSW sits 23 strokes behind 18th-ranked USC Aiken for the top spot in the team standings at the par-72, 6,800-yard Greenwood Country Club.
The tournament field is filled with Peach Belt Conference schools as 10 programs in the Bearcat are from the PBC. 14th-ranked UNC Pembroke is the only PBC program not participating in the event.
Flagler's Joel Dahlenburg fired an 11-under 133 and leads the 87-player field.
Gibson shot rounds of 73 and 66 to pace the Hurricanes. His second-round 66 matched Dahlenburg for the low round of the tournament. Gibson is tied for third overall. Nate Gahman followed an opening-round 75 with 73 for GSW to tie for 22nd. Travis Oeastmann is tied for 47th after his 8-over day (74-78), while teammate Christopher Hall carded a 155 to tie for 60th. J.P. Griffin opened with a 73, but had the round DQ'd because he signed an incorrect scorecard. Griffin posted a 79 in Round 2.
The Hurricanes wrap up the Bearcat Classic with their final round on Tuesday morning.
