The visiting Blazers, ranked #11 in Division II, defeated
Georgia Southwestern in both games of a doubleheader at Lady Cane
Field in Americus on Tuesday evening. A six-run third inning doomed
the Hurricanes in game one as Valdosta State won 7-5. VSU socked
five home runs in game two to coast to the 11-2 victory.
GSW gave the Blazers all they could handle in game one. The ‘Canes took an early 2-0 lead highlighted by a Heather Chambers RBI single. However, the third inning proved to be the turning point of the game as Valdosta State scattered six hits and the ‘Canes committed two errors contributing to a six-run frame. GSW answered with two runs in the fourth, led by a Emily Oglesby RBI single, and a run in the fifth on an Ashley Durden chopper down the left field line, but that would end the scoring for the ‘Canes in game one.
The Hurricanes matched Valdosta State's hit total for the game (13), but couldn't bring enough runners around to score, stranding 13 in the contest.
Brittany Milstid (8-9), who entered the game on a roll posting a 1.21 ERA over her previous three appearances, took the loss in game one for the ‘Canes going two and 1/3 innings, giving up eight hits, striking out two while allowing six earned runs. Amanda Howett threw four and 2/3 of solid relief for GSW allowing no earned runs. Kristen Linsey (17-5) picked up the win for Valdosta State.
Offensively, Jessi Croft led the charge scoring a run while going 3 for 4 with a walk. Shea Weaver, Ashley Durden and Emily Oglesby added two hits apiece.
Hurricane pitching struggled to keep the VSU bats in check in game two. Andi Braswell led the assault for the Blazers by knocking two of the team's five home runs in the game. VSU added three doubles. The Blazers scored in every inning but the fifth.
The lone offensive bright spot for GSW came in the fourth when Oglesby and Kassi Reneau led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Both eventually scored on an RBI single from Brandi Pratt. Those were the only runs the ‘Canes could put on the board and game two ended with the 11-2 final after six innings.
Tiffany Milstid (2-4) took the loss for GSW pitching two innings and allowing four runs. Stephanie Owen (5-0) earned the victory for VSU giving up two runs in five and 1/3 innings while striking out three.
Jennifer Spradley led the way offensively for GSW going 2 for 3. Pratt knocked in both Hurricane runs.
GSW falls to 15-21 on the season. Valdosta State improves to 32-6. The Lady ‘Canes host Albany State on Saturday. First pitch is slated for 1pm.
