AMERICUS, Ga. – Georgia Southwestern head softball coach Eddie Ward has announced his 2011 recruiting class. The Hurricanes will add eight new faces, all with roots from across the state of Georgia, for the 2012 season. The class includes three freshmen and five players with previous collegiate softball experience. The newcomers will look to help the team improve its 22-win season in 2011, which was the program's most wins since becoming a NCAA Division II program in 2007.
Brittny Dennison, Pitcher (Darton College-Albany, Ga.)
Dennison is a Lee County High School product and an Education major. This junior is a terrific hitter, however, Coach Ward plans for her to join the Hurricane pitching staff after she finishes recovering from a shoulder injury.
Chelsea Givens, Catcher (Wallace Community College-Dothan, Ala.)
A native of Donalsonville, Georgia, Givens' excellence behind the plate and at the plate caught the eye of Coach Ward. She will be a junior studying Chemistry when she arrives in Americus.
Dena Bolhorst, Pitcher (Middle Georgia College – Cochran, Ga.)
She is another incoming junior who will be joining the pitching staff at GSW. Bolhorst is from Eastman, Georgia, and she will be studying Exercise Science at Georgia Southwestern. She garnered attention from the staff through her strong performance as a junior college pitcher.
Avery Purser, Infielder (Middle Georgia College – Cochran, Ga.)
The second of three incoming recruits coming in from the Middle Georgia College softball program, Purser is a disciplined hitter with great defensive instincts. She will enroll at GSW as a biology major. Purser went to Bleckley County High School in Cochran, Georgia.
Janna Anderson, Infielder (Middle Georgia College – Cochran, Ga.)
Anderson will join the Hurricanes as the third member of the trio of incoming players from Middle Georgia College. An English major who wants to be a teacher after college, Anderson brings a strong bat and well-honed defensive skills to the diamond.
Rachel McElroy, Outfielder (Grayson High School – Grayson, Ga.)
Coach Ward is excited to add a "high-softball I.Q." player like McElroy. Her strong mental game mixes with her extremely talented physical skills, which were on display through her high-level play in travel ball.
Kiley Doster, Catcher (Monroe High School – Monroe, Ga.)
Doster's excellence on the field is matched by her excellence off it. She's been a part of a high-level travel team for several years and will make a great addition to the GSW's catching corps.
Stephanie Milstid, Pitcher (Harris Country High School – Hamilton, Ga.)
Stephanie will continue the legacy of Milstid softball players at GSW. She is the third Milstid sister to play for the Hurricanes following Tiffany (2008-11) and Katie (2006-09). Her wealth of competitive travel ball experience with her proven excellence in the classroom makes yet another Milstid a welcomed sight in Americus.
