Lady ‘Canes Sweep Home Opener Against Albany State

AMERICUS – Georgia Southwestern Lady Hurricanes took on fellow Division II opponent Albany State on Friday afternoon at the newly renovated Lady 'Cane Field in a doubleheader. The Lady 'Canes only faced three runs against them during the course of both games. The Lady 'Canes swept the series on Valentine's Day.

GAME 1: GSW 2 AS 1

Albany State came out in the first inning ready to go. After Domonique Bryant reached base, Chelsea Hicks brought her home with a double to right center. The Lady 'Canes came back with an answer in the bottom of the first, senior Hayley Knight stole second, advanced to third then on a throwing error made it home.

The score remained 1-1 until the bottom of the 7th inning when GSW's Kiley Doster made it home after a single was hit by Rachel McElroy.

Ashley Cavender took the win for GSW after pitching all seven innings and facing 28 batters. Cavender only allowed one run, five hits, and two walks. Cavender struck out six.

Alexa Lopez took the loss for Albany State after pitching 6.2 innings. Lopez allowed eight hits, two runs, and three walks.

GAME 2: GSW 7 AS 2

Georgia Southwestern came out hot in the bottom of the first. Runs were accomplished by Mason Moreland, Knight, Nellie Moore, Rachel McElroy, Jordan Miller, Tompkins. Again in the third inning, Miller was able to score after being batted in by Thrasher.

Over the fourth and fifth inning Albany State's Hicks and Toni Coleman were able to make it home. Coleman is the only player in the series to hit a home run.

The efforts were a little too late by Albany State as the Lady 'Canes held on to the lead to finish early in the seventh inning. GSW took the win.

Allison Pastor took the win after pitching in seven innings, and only allowing four hits and two runs. Pastor struck out four of the 27 batters faced.

Hicks took the loss for Albany State after pitching in five innings and suffering seven runs and eight hits. Hicks faced 24 batters and struck out two. Kyera Witaker took over the mound for one inning only facing three batters.

 The Lady 'Canes improve to a 7-3 record.

The Lady 'Canes are on the road to Valdosta State on February 18th for a double header. The games is set to begin at 3 p.m.
