AMERICUS - Georgia Southwestern State University head women's basketball coach Kelly Britsky has released the program's 2012-13 schedule which features 11 games at home, 12 on the road and three at neutral sites.
Southwestern opens the 2012-13 campaign with five of its first six games away from the friendly confines of the GSW Storm Dome.
The Lady Hurricanes will take part in the University of West Florida Tip-Off Tournament Nov. 9-10 before a quick stop in Americus for the home opener on Nov. 17 against Valdosta State. Then it's back on the road for GSW as the Lady 'Canes kickoff a four-game trip in Fort Valley on the 24th and 25th to take part in the Second Annual PBC-SIAC Challenge against Albany State and Fort Valley State. Game times and opponent schedule will be announced in the upcoming weeks.
A trip to Truett-McConnell on Nov. 27 preludes the start of Peach Belt Conference play which begins on Dec. 11 for the Lady Hurricanes with a trip to Milledgeville for a game with Georgia College.
Southwestern fans have two opportunities to catch GSW at home in December. Clayton State is in town on the 15th and Mars Hill visits Southwestern on New Year's Eve for the schools' first-ever meeting.
Peach Belt play ensues the rest of the season. The Hurricanes open 2013 at home with visits from USC Aiken (Jan. 3) and PBC newcomer Young Harris College (Jan. 5).
A pair of road games follow on the 12th (Francis Marion) and 13th (UNC Pembroke).
After a quick stop at home against Montevallo (Jan. 17), Southwestern hits the road for its toughest stretch of the season. A four-game PBC swing that includes visits to Flagler (Jan. 19), Armstrong (Jan. 21), North Georgia (Jan. 24) and Columbus State (Jan. 26) will pave the way for the final half of the conference schedule.
The Lady 'Canes intend to enjoy some home cooking down the stretch with five of their final eight games in the Storm Dome between Jan. 30 and Mar. 2, including home dates on three of the final four Saturdays in the regular season.
GSW hosts Lander (Jan. 30), Columbus State (Feb. 7), Georgia College (Feb. 9), Augusta State (Feb. 16) and North Georgia (Mar. 2).
The matchup against Augusta State on Feb. 16 will serve as GSW's 2013 Homecoming game.
The Peach Belt Conference Tournament begins on Thursday, Mar. 7 with the top four teams in each division qualifying for the postseason event. Columbus State will host this year's tourney with the winner earning the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA National Tournament.
The Lady Hurricanes are coming off an 18-9 campaign, their most successful season since joining the NCAA Division II ranks in 2006-07. Southwestern won a program-best 10 conference games in 2011-12 and made its second postseason appearance in three years. GSW was defeated in the 2012 Peach Belt Conference Tournament by Lander (an eventual Elite Eight representative in the NCAA National Tournament).
GSW loses its top five scorers, including All-PBC selections Terra Branch (15.7 ppg) and Adrian Randall (11.8 ppg/10.2 rpg).
- GSW has won 10 of its last 11 non-conference games played in the Storm Dome (including a current six-game winning streak) - the Lady Hurricanes host only two non-PBC contests this season
- Six of the 11 home games in 2012-13 will be played on a Saturday
- Although Young Harris is new to the PBC, the Lady 'Canes have met YHC twice since 2006-07 and won both matchups
- GSW is 5-3 vs. the SIAC since 2006-07
- Exhibition opponent(s), date(s) and start time(s) will be released at a later date
