AMERICUS, Ga. – The Georgia Southwestern Athletic Department has announced that Head Women's Soccer Coach Tony Economopoulos has left the program to take the same position at nearby Mercer University in Macon, Georgia.
Economopoulos was named Head Coach of the GSW Women's Soccer program prior to the 2009 season after previously serving as an assistant coach at Oklahoma State University. Georgia Southwestern State University will begin a thorough search process to find Economopoulos's replacement.
The Lady 'Canes reached several milestones on the pitch in 2011. The defense posted the lowest goals against average in the school's NCAA era (since 2006). The offense recorded the program's first goals against four perennial Division II/Peach Belt Conference powers and the improvements haven't gone unnoticed, as attendance rose for the third-straight year, up 18.8 percent from 2010.
Academic accomplishments were also highlighted, as the Lady Hurricanes placed four girls on the Peach Belt Conference All-Academic Team.
GSW Athletics and Georgia Southwestern State University would like to thank Coach Economopoulos for his efforts over the past three seasons and wish him the best of luck at Mercer.
