Women's Singles On Point

AMERICUS, Ga. -- The Georgia Southwestern State University women's tennis team rolled through singles competition on Saturday afternoon to rally from a 3-0 deficit and win 5-3 at the Susan K. Smith Tennis Complex against Point University. The men's match was much closer than the 8-1 loss for GSW would appear as one of the doubles matches was decided by two games and a pair of the singles matches came down to 10-point tiebreakers.

The Lady Hurricanes lost only one set in singles play to pick up the come-from-behind victory. Charli Allen had the shortest match of the afternoon with her 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles. Celia del Castillo lost only four games at No. 1 and Anneliese Leahy did the same at No. 5.

Del Castillo and Maria Taboada had the best opportunity for a win in doubles, falling two points shy after dropping a 7-5 tiebreaker to decide the match at No. 1.

GSW improved its record to 2-3 while Point fell to 1-1.

The ladies return to action on Friday with matches in Albany, Ga., against Huntingdon College and Albany State University.

Jonathan Martin and Nacho Garcia de Sola played the closest men's match of afternoon in doubles, suffering a 9-7 loss at No. 2.

Alex Canovas Ferrando took the first set from Federico Barbon, but a tiebreaker decided the match at No. 1 singles. Barbon came back for the 6-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7) win. Steven Blythe pushed Julien Pereria to a decisive tiebreaker, that had to go to extra points, after winning the second set, but Pereria prevailed 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9)

GSW fell to 2-2 this spring with the loss while Point improved its record to 5-0.

The men return to action Saturday with a trip to NCAA Division I member Mercer University for an 11 a.m. match.
