'Canes open season 10th at UNCP Invitational

PEMBROKE, N.C. - The Lady Hurricanes cross country team finished in last place on Saturday at the 10-team UNCP Invitational, hosted by UNC Pembroke, at Luther Britt Park.

Sophomore Katy York led the way for GSW, finishing the 6,000-meter race 39th with a time of 30:34.78.

Juawana Stringer and Britney Lewis were 41st and 51st, while Krystal Thomas took 53rd and Laura Southwell crossed the line in 55th place.

With 25 points, Augusta State easily outpointed Pfeiffer (69) for the team title. Wingate (106), Winston-Salem State (107) and host UNC Pembroke (121) rounded out the top five.

Kristyn Zeiler from Methodist University crossed the finish line first with a time of 23:24.90, followed by Augusta State's Holly Keeper at 24:17.44. Augusta State had four runners finish in the top six.

GSW travels to Albany, Ga., September 19 to compete in the Darton Invitational.
