Lady Hurricanes move up at conference meet

EVANS, Ga. - The Georgia Southwestern cross country team finished ninth out of 10 teams on Saturday at the Peach Belt Conference championship meet. Kelsey Baker led the way for GSW, finishing the 6k race 48th with a time of 28:30. It was the first time in three years of NCAA competition that GSW finished ahead of another school at the conference championships.

Casi McDonald (28:42) and Mollie McGowan (29:01) finished back-to-back in the 50th and 51st slots, respectively. Leady Cuellar (30:15) took 55th place and Katy York (30:51) made a late surge to end in 58th out of 63 runners.

While Baker's 48th position was a school record for best finish at the PBC race, Southwestern's top four runners finished higher than any previous GSW runners at the season-ending event.

Columbus University finished with 27 points to take the team title for the sixth-consecutive year. Augusta State took second (58) and UNC Pembroke was a distant third (105).

Brittney Skiles from CSU crossed the finish line first with a time of 23:36, followed by teammate Naomi Tanui (23:45). The two flip-flopped positions from their finishes last fall. Columbus State had four runners finish in the top nine.
