GSW fourth at JSU Season Opener
The Lady Hurricanes cross country team finished in fourth place on Saturday at the Strut's Season Opener, hosted by Jacksonville State University, in Oxford, Ala. NCAA Division I programs Georgia State and JSU were two of the three schools that finished ahead of Southwestern.
Freshman Casi McDonald led the way for GSW, finishing her first collegiate race 27th with a time of 16:30.
Newcomers Mollie McGowan (36th, 18:35), Becky Atkins (38th, 19:11) and Leady Cuellar (40th, 19:49) had top-40 debuts for GSW. Katy York followed closely behind in 41st (20:06).
With 22 points, Georgia State easily finished ahead of West Alabama (52) for the team title. The hosts, Jacksonville State, finished third (65). Stillman College and Southern Union ended fifth and sixth, respectively.
Katherine Schowalter from Georgia State crossed the finish line first with a time of 14:01, followed by teammate Anna Sinclair at 14:04. Georgia State had five runners finish in the top eight. There were 53 runners in the field.
GSW hosts the inaugural Remembrance Run at Southland Academy in Americus on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.
