McGowan Earns Academic All-District Honors

AMERICUS – Mollie McGowan, a senior on the Georgia Southwestern women's cross country team, has been named to the 2012-13 Capital One Academic All-District III Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Team.

McGowan holds a 3.97 grade point average as an exercise science major. With the first team selection, she now becomes eligible to earn Academic All-American honors, with voting to be done in the near future.

A three-year member of the Lady Hurricanes cross country program, McGowan eclipsed her 5k personal-best mark by 49 seconds with a time of 22:32 this fall at the 10-team Point Invite on Oct. 5, finishing 24th. She then beat her own 6k best time at the Peach Belt Conference meet on Oct. 20 with a 27:13.

The Americus native earned her third PBC All-Academic Women's Cross Country First Team award in the fall.

In addition, McGowan was recently named GSW Female Scholar Athlete of the Year for the second-consecutive year and she completed her second year as a member of Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society.

A two-sport athlete, McGowan is also a three-time PBC All-Academic women's tennis award winner and is on pace to be named to the PBC Presidential Honor Roll for a third-consecutive year.

McGowan becomes the first GSW student-athlete to earn two Academic All-District honors in the department's NCAA era (since 2006).

Student-athletes are nominated for Capital One Academic All-District consideration by current College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) members. Voting for Academic All-District is done by current CoSIDA members in players' respective districts. Those who obtain All-District status move onto the national All-Academic ballot; these national awards are voted upon by Academic All-America Committee members and current CoSIDA Board of Directors.

To be eligible for the Capital One Academic program, a student-athlete must be a starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings.
