GSW XC's Hurricane Highlight #2: A Year of Academic Excellence

AMERICUS - The No. 2 highlight of GSW's running season consists of the numerous academic honors the 2012-13 team took home this past year.

The Georgia Southwestern women's cross country team was honored at the annual GSW end-of-the-year athletics banquet with the 2012-13 President's Cup as the squad earned the highest yearly team-GPA of all ten Georgia Southwestern athletic teams.

The Lady Hurricanes achieved a team-GPA of 3.476 for the 2012-13 academic year.

In addition, Mollie McGowan, who currently holds a 3.974 GPA, was honored with the Susan Kay Smith award that goes to the senior female athlete who is the best all-around representative of GSW Athletics.

McGowan, an excercise science major, was also named to the First-Team All-Academic Peach Belt team in addition to be honored as GSW's Female Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Joining McGowan on the Peach Belt's First-Team All-Academic team is senior Kaitlin Wilkinson. In addition, sophomore Micah Bucher earned a conference academic honorable mention award.

To be eligible for the All-Academic team, a student-athlete must 1) participate in at least half of his/her team’s events and be either a starter or significant contributor; 2) achieved a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and 3) completed at least one full academic year at his or her current institution.
