Lady Jaguars dominate second half, beat
Georgia Southwestern, 82-55
AUGUSTA, Ga. - Augusta State delivered its largest win of the
season on Saturday with a 82-55 Peach Belt Conference victory over
the Lady Hurricanes in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
The Lady Hurricanes' 55 points were the fewest Augusta State has
allowed all season. The previous low was 57 points vs. Armstrong
Atlantic on Jan. 10
With the win, the Lady Jaguars improved to 5-12 overall and 3-7
in conference play. The loss dropped Georgia Southwestern to 5-12
overall and 0-10 in the league.
The Lady Jaguars had five shooting in double digits for the
first time this season, including junior Brittany Jarrard who led
the team with 15 points. Senior Tracey Paschal netted 13 points and
five rebounds, while junior Nicole Mealing tallied 12 points.
Junior Porsha White added 11 points and junior Jasmine Godwin had
10 points.
For the Lady Hurricanes, senior forward Jamilah Sharp led with
13 rebounds and eight points. Junior guard Brandi Burris had eight
points and seven rebounds, while junior Clarissa Corbett added
eight points off the bench.
Georgia Southwestern jumped out on top with a layup from Burris,
but ASU answered back with a layup from Mealing and ended the first
half with a 32-24 lead.
ASU came out and dominated the Lady Hurricanes the whole second
half. The Lady Jags led by as many as 29 points.
The Lady Hurricanes owned the rebounding edge 52-40 and shot
63.0 percent from the free throw line. GSU only shot 25.7 percent
from the field and only connected on 2-of-16 3-point attempts (12.5
percent).
ASU shot 47.6 percent from the field and connected on 15-of-20
free throw attempts (75.0 percent), but only shot 33.3 percent from
the 3-point line.
The Lady 'Canes are back in action at the Storm Dome
on Wednesday night for a 5:30 p.m. matchup with North
Georgia.

No. 4 Augusta State rolls past GSW,
84-66
AUGUSTA, Ga. - Augusta State shot nearly 60 percent from the
field en route to an 84-66 Peach Belt Conference victory over
Georgia Southwestern Saturday afternoon at Christenberry
Fieldhouse.
The win was the 11th straight PBC home win for the fourth-ranked
Jaguars, who improved to 14-3 overall and 8-2 in the PBC. The loss
dropped the Hurricanes to 7-10 overall and 3-7 in league play. The
win was the third straight for ASU over Georgia Southwestern and
the fourth win in five meetings since GSW joined the Peach Belt for
the 2006-07 season.
Junior guard Ben Madgen netted a team-high 18 points for the
Jags, while junior forward Fred Brathwaite tallied 15. Senior
center Garret Siler logged his fourth double-double of the season
with 14 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks.
Senior guard Anthony Sargent booked a game-high 28 points, but
was the only Hurricane to reach double figures.
The Hurricanes led 5-4 following a Sargent free throw at the
15:41 mark. Junior reserve guard Daniel Dixon drilled a 3-pointer
1:16 later to put ASU ahead for good at 7-5 and spark a 9-1 spurt.
The Jags led by as much as 18 after two Siler free throws with
1:15 left en route to a 40-22 halftime advantage. GSW got within 12
on a Sedale McGee-Jones free throw with 16:52 to play. ASU answered
with eight straight points -- the last two on a Brathwaite dunk -
and the Jaguar lead never dipped below 13 the rest of the way.
ASU, which entered the contest ranked 19th in the nation in
field goal percentage, shot 65.2 percent in the second half. The
Jags set a season-high with 30 assists on 31 made field goals and
doubled up the 'Canes 38-19 on the glass.
The Hurricanes are back in action at the Storm Dome on Wednesday
night for a 7:30 p.m. tilt with North Georgia.
