AMERICUS - Freshman Zach Smith tossed a complete-game, two-hit one-run game and Stephen Eldridge belted a three-run home run to lead the Georgia Southwestern baseball team to a 6-1 victory over Albany State at Hurricane Stadium on Wednesday evening.

GSW has won five of its last six games and improves to 10-20 overall. Albany State sees a 10-game winning streak snapped and dips to 22-15.

The Hurricanes took advantage of a pair walks to open the second inning as Josh Sanders singled home Les Cromer and Devyn Newberry to give GSW a 2-0 lead. That would prove to be all the cushion Smith would need.

Sanders picked up a sacrifice fly RBI in the eighth inning before Eldridge delivered the three-run shot to left field.

Newberry and Evan Alderman finished with two hits apiece to lead GSW at the plate. Alderman extended his hitting streak to 14 games. Sanders matched Eldridge with three RBIs.

Smith (2-3) was spectacular for the Hurricanes. The freshman faced the minimum until the fifth inning when ASU collected its first hit. He retired the side in order six times, walked two and struck out nine. 

The Golden Rams trotted six pitchers out to the mound. Starter Andrew Bacon (4-4) took the loss for ASU after allowing two runs in two innings of work.

Southwestern travels to Young Harris College on Friday for a Peach Belt Conference series opener against the Mountain Lions at 6 p.m.
