Comeback Falls Short At Middle Georgia

MACON, Ga. - The Georgia Southwestern men's soccer team scored twice in the final 10 minutes at Middle Georgia State University on Saturday evening but fell a goal short against the Knights, suffering a 3-2 loss.

GSW drops to 0-1-1 this season while Middle Georgia improved its record to 3-2.

Tomas Lopez gave the home team a quick lead with his goal in the 11th minute.

Middle Georgia took its 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

Rasmus Arousell, who scored three times in handing GSW a 5-1 defeat last season, gave the Knights the cushion they needed on Saturday as he added a two goals in a span of 6 1/2 minutes to put the hosts ahead 3-0 with 33:14 to play.

GSW rattled off four consecutive corner kicks starting in the 79th minute to eventually punch in its first goal of the match. Chris Steinwachs took the assist from Zack Pirtle to make the score 3-1.

Silvio Polly converted a penalty kick for GSW in the 87th minute to pull the visitors within a goal.

The Hurricanes had one final chance for the equalizer with 2:47 remaining but were unable to convert a corner kick.  

Middle Georgia finished with an 11-5 advantage in shots on goal while the Hurricanes won the corner kicks battle, 7-3. GSW was whistled for 14 fouls, compared to six for the hosts. A total of eight yellow cards were handed out in the match with five delivered to Southwestern players.

GSW goalkeeper Garrett Blamire saved seven. Evan Pidgeon stopped three for Middle Georgia.

The Hurricanes travel to UNC Pembroke on Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. Peach Belt Conference match against the Braves.
