Justin Payne enters his first season at the helm for Georgia Southwestern.
Payne spent eight seasons as an assistant women's basketball coach and 10 years overall under head coach DoBee Plaisance at NCAA Division I Nicholls State University prior to being named the head coach at GSW.
Nicholls State finished with a record of 20-12 in 2018-19, posted a mark of 14-4 in the Southland Conference and earned a trip to the Women's Basketball Invitational postseason tournament. In 2017-18, the Colonels won the Southland Conference Tournament as a No. 4 seed to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.
Payne, a product of Opelousas, La., was a three-year starter at point guard for Nicholls State, and lettered four seasons from 2005-06 to 2008-09. He led the Colonels to a 20-11 record in 2008-09. He led the team for three seasons in assists, tallying a total of 329 assists in his career which ranks sixth in program history. Payne started 89 games and played in 111 during his collegiate career.
Payne and his wife, Ravae', have a 1-year-old son, Joshua.
