Canes Shoot Tournament's Low Round to Close, Climb to 3rd at Mizuno Intercollegiate

GAINESVILLE, Ga. -- The sixth-ranked Georgia Southwestern men's golf team posted a blistering 278 (-10) on Tuesday to climb three spots and finish third out of 15 teams at the Mizuno Intercollegiate hosted by the University of North Georgia. The season-opening event for GSW, played at the par-72, 7,166-yard Chattahoochee Golf Club, featured 10 programs ranked in the top 25 of NCAA Division II according to the preseason Bushnell/Golfweek Golf Coaches Association of America Coaches Poll. Georgia Southwestern posted the low round by a team in the tournament with Tuesday's 10-under. Overall, the Hurricanes had two players finish under par and inside the top 10 of the 81-player field. 

GSW made a steady climb up the leaderboard following an opening round 7-over-par on Monday that had them in ninth place through 18 holes. Newcomer Jordan Jones was solid throughout as he finished Round 1 at even par before carding only two bogeys the rest of the way. Jones birdied holes No. 4 and No. 10 in both of his final two rounds and added a birdie on No. 15 in Round 2 and on No. 16 in the final round to finish with a 4-under par for the tournament to secure sixth place. Oscar Hammar enjoyed a top 10 finish with his 2-under 214. Hammar shot a 70 in each of his final two rounds to climb 21 spots on the individual leaderboard following his opening round 74. Hammar played the par-5 holes at 6-under for the tournament which ranked a stroke behind the leaders. Joao Costa carded the low round of the event for GSW with his 68 on Tuesday which shot him 21 slots up the leaderboard where he finished tied for 19th at even par. Costa had the Hurricanes lone eagle and added three birdies in Round 3. Newcomer Stefan Rojas played his final 18 at 1-under and finished tied for 27th overall with a 2-over-par. Sam Brown was seven strokes off Rojas' pace and tied for 52nd.

16th-ranked Lander University won the event with a 10-under par. Schools from the Peach Belt Conference captured the top four positions in the standings. Morgan Cain from Lincoln Memorial University won the individual title in a playoff with an overall score of 7-under 209.

The Hurricanes return home to host the 11th annual Hurricane Invitational that starts Monday morning at Doublegate Country Club in Albany, Ga.
